How an AI-assisted visual workshop translated actors, positions, ties, institutions, and levels of analysis into the Organization of Power Lab's Home hero.
How should a research lab visualize the organization of power? This retrospective documents fifteen visual studies, the shared grammar behind them, and the interface tests that led to our selected Home hero.
What We Were Doing
The Home hero needed to communicate the Organization of Power Lab's research identity without becoming a literal diagram, a generic technology illustration, or ornamental academic branding. Working with Codex, I used an iterative, AI-assisted image workshop to test how one shared visual grammar could support several conceptual emphases. Human editorial and design decisions guided the concepts, comparisons, revisions, and final selection.
Establishing the Signal Field
We evaluated art and interface together. The Signal Field layout uses a full-surface editorial image, a directional semi-opaque navy veil, an HTML site title and purpose statement, a cyan structural rail, an amber terminal rule, and responsive cover cropping. The image carries atmosphere and conceptual structure; essential words remain accessible HTML.
From Broad Studies to a Korea-Centered Field
The first round established a broad visual language. The second retained those concepts while shifting the geographic center to North and South Korea, with China, Japan, Taiwan, and the Russian Far East serving as supporting context. This aligned the field with the lab's empirical center of gravity without relying on flags, official symbols, literal political iconography, photorealistic faces, or generic neon science fiction.
Ten Art Directions
Anonymous figures and circles represent actors; seats, squares, architectural frames, and organizational nodes represent positions and institutions. Their connections suggest actor-actor, actor-position, and position-position ties. Vertical scale moves from individual to organizational and system levels. Ice, ultramarine, amber, cyan signals, navy fields, and restrained archival texture form the shared Signal & Structure grammar.
Each study appears first as unobstructed artwork and then inside the Home hero treatment. The mock-ups use the same image, with the interface layer rendered as live HTML and CSS rather than baked into the art.

The Favorites and Selected Direction
My two favorite directions were Multilevel Power Atlas and Generations of Office. Generations of Office offers the strongest human and temporal account of careers, succession, sponsorship, patronage, and brokerage.
I selected Multilevel Power Atlas for Home because it most completely represents the lab's wider intellectual program: individual actors become organizational evidence, organizational structures connect to a regional political system, and the composition links three levels of analysis without becoming a literal chart.
The final hero uses the Korea-centered Multilevel Power Atlas with a lighter directional veil. The source remains visible on large screens, while a stronger bottom-up veil preserves copy contrast on compact screens.
What the Workshop Clarified
A successful hero can communicate relations and levels without pretending to be a data visualization. It can remain geographically grounded without relying on national symbolism, preserve a quiet region for copy, and support the scholarly calm of the wider site. Most importantly, the cybernetic signal layer works when it carries meaningful structure rather than serving as decoration.
